NMA Warns FG Against Politicising Health Sector

The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Osun State chapter, Anthony Onipede, has warned the Federal Government against playing politics with nation’s health sector.
Speaking to Daily Independent in Osogbo, he noted that such development would lead to the detriment of the healthcare of Nigerians. The chairman, who lamented the ongoing strike action embarked upon by the guild, condemned government’s attitude towards it.

He alleged that politics has being introduced into the association’s management as well as the administration of the health sector in general.

Onipede pointed out that the actions of these current politicians would collapse the health sector instead of enhancing it for Nigerians to enjoy a good healthcare delivery.

The chairman, who reiterated that the health sector should be given priority because it deals with human lives, called on medical practitioners to call the shots, noting that not abiding to the objectives of the guild has degenerated into the ongoing crisis in the sector.

Onipede promised that the association would not allow the health sector to be politicized, adding that medical and dental professionals would fight against such a move.

NMA, who also criticized the introduction of multiple directors and awarding of political titles, stated that the move would be detrimental to the patients.

“We are opposed to self-serving and disruptive positions and titles that will not augur well for the system and ultimately, the patients,” Onipede said.

It would be recalled that doctors all over Nigeria agreed on embarking on indefinite strike on July 1 over pay, appointment titles and positions, two weeks after they had issued an ultimatum to force government to consider their demands.

However, several concerned citizens have reacted negatively to the ongoing strike by medical doctors under the Nigerian Medical Association.
